The lockdown at Fort Sam Houston has been lifted and one man arrested, after authorities said he drove through the entrance gate without stopping — sending bomb teams into alert mode.
A military spokesman described the situation as a “high-security incident,” but that there was no threat, Reuters reported.
Alex Delgado, spokesman for the 502nd Air Base Wing, said the lockdown was lifted Sunday night, but didn’t specify at what point the man was detained and arrested — or what his charges were, CBS News reported.
The lockdown lasted several hours and led to long lines of traffic at the gates, USA Today reported.
KENS-TV reported that a driver was actually taken into custody after failing to stop at the gate for inspection, which triggered a manhunt. An explosives team was ultimately dispatched to check out the man’s vehicle.
The base was established in 1910 and spans 3,000 acres. It’s the home of military medicine and contains more than 900 historic buildings.
