COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - AAA Carolinas says South Carolinians traveling this Thanksgiving holiday will enjoy the lowest gas prices in five years.

The travel organization says 656,000 South Carolinians are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home, and 90 percent of them are driving to their destination.

That means 24,000 additional South Carolinians are taking a road trip, compared to last Thanksgiving.

Gas prices in the state averaged $2.59 on Friday. That’s down 57 cents from Labor Day and 47 cents from what drivers paid at the pump a year ago.

The biggest driving days of the Thanksgiving holiday are Wednesday and Sunday.

In South Carolina, the highest average price per gallon of unleaded gas can be found in Charleston, at $2.65; the least expensive is in the Greenville-Spartanburg area, at $2.54.
