In the recent op-ed “A brave new world of intolerance” (Commentary, Nov. 14), the Montgomery County, Md., school board rationalizes doing away with acknowledging all religious-themed holidays because the board is “closing for operational reasons.”

If the closings are truly being done for “operational reasons,” such as structural or facilities maintenance, then I challenge the board to choose other dates and keep school open on those days. But we all know those aren’t the reasons for the closures. If the reason for closure is in fact insufficient staff on those days, let’s be honest about that. The vacation time is scheduled because it is Christmas.

A society that truly embraces diversity doesn’t run from it by trying to homogenize society.
