Ohio’s Republican Gov. John Kasich said in a Fox News televised appearance that he’s not a Republican In Name Only, as many charge — rather, he simply cares about people and combines his politics with his religious beliefs.

Mr. Kasich, in an interview on “Your World with Neil Cavuto,” referred to the biblical command to protect widows, the poor and the downtrodden.

“We hear it in the Sermon on the Mount,” he said, Newsmax reported. “To me that really is conservatism. Help somebody, but don’t let them be stuck where they are. Give them an opportunity to rise beyond their conditions.”

He then referred to society’s treatment of the mentally ill.

He said: “To me, it is conservative to say everyone is made in the image of God and everyone deserves a chance. And sometimes, if they’re not being helped any other way, then we’ve got to get the government to partner and to help these folks,” Newsmax reported.

Mr. Kasich suggested that those who criticize his views as left-leaning, and who attempt to label him a RINO, aren’t acting in accordance with the biblically based command to help the needy, Newsmax said.
