Six football players from California University of Pennsylvania have been arrested for brutally beating a man unconscious outside of an off-campus restaurant in Washington County.
Police say the players beat and stomped the victim, 30-year-old Lewis Campbell, outside of a Spuds restaurant and then fled yelling, “Football strong!” The victim was in intensive care Friday with severe brain trauma, a local CBS affiliate reported.
James Williamson, Corey Ford, Jonathan Barlow, Rodney Gillin and D’Andre Dunkley were arrested Thursday. Shelby Wilkerson, a 20-year-old freshman linebacker, turned himself in on Saturday.
The suspects were reportedly charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, harassment and conspiracy.
The university forfeited Saturday’s football game against Gannon, jeopardizing the Division II team’s best season in three years, The Associated Press reported.
Interim president Geraldine Jones called Saturday’s additional arrest “disheartening news,” but said “everyone involved in this incident should be held accountable for their actions.”
“It must be clearly understood that the actions of a small group of individuals are not representative of our entire student body, nor of all Cal U student-athletes,” she said in a statement, the CBS affiliate reported. “I ask our entire campus community to recommit to our University’s core values, and to demonstrate through their words and their actions the best that our University can be.”
