MINNEAPOLIS — Robert Griffin III is active and will make his return from a dislocated left ankle on Sunday when the Washington Redskins face the Minnesota Vikings.
Griffin, who dislocated the ankle in a Week 2 victory over Jacksonville, had missed the Redskins’ previous six games. The quarterback was able to return to a full practice for the first time on Wednesday, at which point he began taking the bulk of the repetitions with the starters.
With Griffin back, Colt McCoy, who guided the Redskins to victories against Tennessee and Dallas in their last two games, will be the backup quarterback. Kirk Cousins, the starter for the first five games while Griffin was out, is inactive for the first time in his two-plus seasons in the league.
Also inactive for the Redskins on Sunday are running back Silas Redd, right tackle Tyler Polumbus, wide receiver Aldrick Robinson, right guard Spencer Long, outside linebacker Jackson Jeffcoat and cornerback Greg Ducre.
Cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who injured a knee in practice on Friday and was listed as questionable on the injury report, is active and will play.
Strong safety Phillip Thomas, who was signed off the Redskins’ practice squad on Saturday, is also expected to make his debut. In his second year, Thomas missed all of his rookie season because of a Lisfranc sprain in his left foot and has not played in a regular-season game.
Minnesota tight end Kyle Rudolph, who is recovering from groin surgery, is inactive for the sixth consecutive game. The Vikings also marked strong safety Antone Exum, cornerback Jabari Price, fullback Zach Line, weakside linebacker Brandon Watts, left guard David Yankey and right guard Austin Wentworth as healthy scratches.
