Several leaflets that appeared to be Islamic State propaganda were recovered this week near a major military installation in Virginia, Pentagon officials said Friday.

The leaflets, found in the town of Quantico, Virginia, included an Islamic State flag and writing in Arabic that said, “We are here from Mexico and came by train,” NBC News reported.

“While these leaflets may be a hoax, base officials are taking their discovery seriously,” a Marine Corps spokesman told the Daily Beast.

The Islamic State flag was reportedly printed upside down and backward on the leaflets. A total of seven were recovered by security personnel, but the Marine Corps would not say which building they were found in, nor who found them, the Daily Beast reported. No similar messages have been found at other bases, the Marine Corps said.

Both the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the FBI have been informed and are coordinating with base security to investigate, officials told NBC News.

The Marine Corps on Wednesday instructed personnel to report “even the most minor suspicious activity” and to watch what they share on social media, Military Times reported.
