State-run media in China reported that 11 kindergartner-age children were killed Wednesday when the minibus they were riding crashed into a truck.
The driver, who was transporting the children to school, was also killed in the Shandong province collision, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Police told the media outlet that the minibus had been hired by the kindergarteners’ school to serve as a school transportation vehicle and that it was carting more passengers than it was legally allowed, The Associated Press reported.
Overcrowding on buses is common in China, however, especially in rural areas where education funds are in short supply.
