Grammy nominated singer Shanice and “One on One” actor and comedian Flex Anderson were living the dream: family, fortune, fame. But it all crumbled beneath them when the police evicted Shanice and their children in 2010.

“At the height of it, what we were bringing in was probably $1.3 million,” Mr. Alexander told Yahoo! Finance’s Mandi Woodruff in an interview, “[but] I had never had the training in handling finances.”

After the couple was married, armed with their limitless credit card, they went on shopping sprees, bought new cars and invested in real estate.

“That was when everything collapsed,” Mr. Alexander said. With their debt in the millions, the couple was eventually bankrupt and homeless.

“It was devastating,” said Shanice. “There were so many nights where I had to cry on his shoulder, and nights where he had to cry on my shoulder.”

But they didn’t lose their faith, Shanice said. “He would tell me, come on, we got it … God’s got a plan for us, we’re not going to give up.”

They haven’t completely recovered yet, but they have learned to “just be smart and spend like it’s not coming,” Mr. Alexander said.

“Flex and Shanice,” their new reality TV show, premiered on OWN on Nov. 1.
