Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican, is hosting an event in January dubbed the “Iowa Freedom Summit,” with several possible GOP presidential contenders in 2016 scheduled to attend.
“It’ll be an event that all the nation stops and looks at,” Mr. King told The Des Moines Register. “What gets said and done, some of those things will be driving the conversation in the country.”
The event in January comes about a year out from the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses and is co-hosted by the conservative group Citizens United.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee are all scheduled to speak, The Des Moines Register reported — and all three have a significant following among Christian conservatives who comprise a key segment of the voters who will determine the Republican party’s 2016 presidential nominee.
For his part, Mr. King also told the paper he plans to hit up a few other early presidential states.
“I intend to slip over to New Hampshire and down to South Carolina and perhaps a number of other states to promote the idea that we’re working together to get the best result for our country,” he said.
