A teacher in New Mexico is facing criminal charges over allegations he threatened a student with a knife for talking during a surprise quiz.

Police said Benjamin Nagurski, 63, who teaches math at a middle school a few miles from Albuquerque, told one of his students to quit chatting with another student during the pop quiz and threatened to cut him with a knife, CBS News reported.

“Students interviewed later by officers all corroborated the story,” Bernalillo Police Chief Tom Romero told CBS News.

The student then confronted Mr. Nagurski about the knife. And the teacher allegedly responded: “Maybe next time, I’ll pull a machete on you,” police said, CBS News responded.

Mr. Nagurski allegedly told police he only shook the knife in his hand, but he apologized. He faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of an unlawful weapon.
