The FBI is concerned that roughly 150 Americans it is tracking have gone to Syria and are fighting alongside the Islamic State group.

FBI Director James B. Comey made the announcement on Tuesday while speaking to reporters in Boston.

“We have tracked coming up on close to 150 people who traveled from the United States to Syria for all manner of motivations — a significant number of them to fight,” Reuters reported.

The FBI director went on to say that the agency has “a pretty good handle” on over a dozen suspected fighters but that he doesn’t have high confidence he could “see the entire universe” of American terror recruits.

Mr. Comey refused to tell reporters how many suspected fighters have returned to the U.S., but he did say that the FBI tracks them “very closely.”
