A school in the Dallas area sent home permission slips for parents to sign off reading assignments for their children — for books that are deemed classics, like “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “A Farewell to Arms.”

Teachers at Highland Park Independent School District sent the forms home for their high school juniors in Advanced Placement English courses, The Dallas Morning News reported. And in addition to the Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway classics, the list also included “The Scarlett Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Daily Caller said.

The books have been rated by various media outlets as among the best works of all time — though they contain adult themes, like adultery, and racial slurs that were common to the period.
