Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, the last Republican standing in 2012 against eventual GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, says he plans to make a decision on another run by the middle of 2015.
“Four years ago, we ended up announcing in June of 2011. If past is a portent of the future, that’s probably a ballpark,” Mr. Santorum told Politico.
Mr. Santorum said he’s talking to donors and potential voters in early primary states to gauge an interest in what is looking to be a crowded field of potential GOP candidates in 2016.
Mr. Santorum, who has a devoted base of support among Christian conservatives, could tap into that well again if he ultimately decides to enter the race, though he could face competition from the likes of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.
