An MRI examination taken on Trent Williams’ right knee Monday morning showed that the left tackle has a sprained MCL in his right knee and a sprained right ankle, leaving his availability for the Washington Redskins’ next game, at San Francisco, in question.

Williams played just six snaps in the Redskins’ 27-7 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday when Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy fell on Williams’ lower right leg. Williams missed the remainder of the game, with rookie Morgan Moses filling in at left tackle.

“If the trainers say that he’s healthy enough to go, and Trent says he can go, he’ll go,” coach Jay Gruden said Monday. “But if he feels not ready, then Morgan will have to play. Morgan did a fine job in his absence, and we feel good about Morgan, but obviously, Trent’s one of our captains and one of the best tackles in the NFL. We need him, but if he’s not good, we’ll obviously not play him. But that’ll come down to the trainers and Trent later in the week.”

Williams had previously dislocated the kneecap in his right knee in a Week 4 loss to the New York Giants, but he missed only 10 snaps that game and has been able to play each week since.

Examinations also showed that nose tackle Chris Baker has a strained right sternoclavicular joint and is considered day-to-day. So, too, are tight end Jordan Reed, who strained his right hamstring late in the third quarter, and outside linebacker Trent Murphy, who aggravated the sprained PCL in his right knee.

Left tackle Shawn Lauvao, who sustained a concussion on Sunday, is going through the league’s protocol and will be evaluated throughout the week.
