Independent candidate Bill Walker has won Alaska’s gubernatorial race according to CNN projections on Saturday, ousting Republican incumbent Sean Parnell. Mr. Walker is the first independent to win the governorship in Alaska.
The race was deemed too close to call on election night, with Walker leading by less than 3,000 votes. On Saturday, after questioned ballots were confirmed and early votes, absentee ballots and outstanding ballots were counted, Mr. Walker won by 4,600 votes, CNN reported.
Mr. Walker, a lawyer and former Valdez mayor and city councilor, announced that he would run as an independent in 2013 to compete with Mr. Parnell who defeated him by a wide margin in the 2010 Republican gubernatorial primary.
