A protest for higher wages at a Los Angeles-area Walmart ended with 23 arrested, police said.
The protesters — supported by the United Food & Commercial Workers union — were demanding that Walmart raise their base pay to at least $15 an hour, The Associated Press reported.
They assembled inside the Walmart and staged a sit-down strike, ultimately heading outside and blocking traffic at a Pico Rivera intersection, AP said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded and starting making arrests, AP said.
“Today we focused on serving our customers, but every day we’re focused on the opportunity that we offer our associates across the country,” Walmart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan told AP.
Similar demonstrations and protests against Walmart have been taking place at select sites around the nation.
