Sen. Roger Wicker, Mississippi Republican and newly elected chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Friday there will be no government shutdowns under a new Congress to be led entirely by the GOP.
“We’re not going to have any government shutdowns. We’re not going to have any threats of impeachment,” Mr. Wicker said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Incoming Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, has likewise ruled out a government shutdown over President Obama’s planned executive actions to grant legal status to some illegal immigrants.
House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, said Thursday the GOP will fight Mr. Obama “tooth and nail” if he continues down that path. A number of House Republicans are calling for language to be inserted in a forthcoming spending bill to prevent the president from taking unilateral action on immigration.
“This is the wrong way to govern. This is exactly what the American people said on Election Day they didn’t want,” Mr. Boehner said. “And so all the options are on the table. We’re having discussions with our members, and no decisions have been made as to how we will fight this if he proceeds.”
