Two Navy civilian police officers were attacked and injured while confronting a knife-wielding intruder at a submarine base in Connecticut.

The man — described in a U.S. Navy statement as “belligerent” and “brandishing a knife” — tried to storm a pedestrian gate at the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, CBS News reported.

A gate guard opened fire on the suspect.

Authorities said two officers were injured, though. One suffered a minor stab wound and the other had injuries from ricocheting bullets, CBS said. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment and shortly after were released.

Officials say the suspect was taken into custody and turned over to Groton police, with no injuries, CBS said. His name hasn’t been released, but the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and FBI have joined in the investigation.
