A stretch of beach in Hawaii has been shut down to swimmers after a snorkeler visiting from Alaska said he had been bitten by a shark.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources said the 50-year-old man from Homer was snorkeling off Airplane Beach in West Maui when he saw a 5-foot-long shark, felt a bump and then experienced pain immediately after, The Associated Press reported.

He was able to swim to shore unassisted, but then was helped to the hospital for treatment of a laceration on his leg.

The department shut down the beach area until it could fully assess the situation, AP said.
