As expected, GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was elected to be the next majority leader by his Republican colleagues Thursday.

Mr. McConnell was elected by acclamation and is poised to lead a Republican caucus of at least 53 members come January.

Other members of the GOP leadership team will also reprise their roles in the next Congress.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas was elected as whip, Sen. John Thune of South Dakota will remain conference chairman, Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming will continue as chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, and Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri was re-elected vice conference chairman.

Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi beat out Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada to be the next chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), Senate Republicans’ campaign arm.
