California maize maze causes 911 panic: ‘All I see is corn!’

A corn maze in California is so large and confounding that several visitors in recent weeks have been forced to call 911 for help back to home base.

“All I see is corn! I’m afraid,” one female trapped in the Cool Pact Pumpkins field in Dixon, outside Sacramento, told a 911 operator, the New York Daily News reported.

The maze is touted as the largest in the world — and calls to 911 aren’t that uncommon, the newspaper said.

This year alone, seven visitors placed panicked telephone calls to the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, begging for help.

“There’s a little bit of fear involved,” Deputy Daryl Snedeker told KMAX-TV. “I think they are overwhelmed. You can get a little worked up when you can’t get out of a place and everything looks the same.”

And owner Matt Cooley said the calls for aid occurred just about every weekend the maze was open to tourists.

“The sheriff then calls me and says, ’Hey, we got another one,’” he said told the local station.

The normal 911 response is to refer callers back to Mr. Cooley, who then sends out farm workers to help them to freedom, the New York Daily News said.

Sheriffs say they take the callers very seriously — and hold back their laughter.

“We don’t laugh,” Mr. Snedeker said, the New York Daily News said. “It’s not a comedy to us and our dispatchers have a very serious job and they take every call to 911 very serious.”
