HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - City tourism official Rick Taylor says the Hattiesburg Zoo may buy chicks to replace four flamingos that have died since the exhibit opened in April 2013.

Two died of natural causes and two died in early October after a female was taken from the zoo on Oct. 7 in what officials called a fraternity prank. The female was euthanized because of severe injuries. Her mate also was injured and died Oct. 8. One student has been charged and nine others are being investigated.

Taylor tells The Hattiesburg American (https://hatne.ws/1wNe150 ) that this month is nesting season, and officials plan to talk to Zoo Atlanta about chicks. He says that even if they’re bought now, it will be spring or early summer before they’re big enough to come to Hattiesburg.
