Barry Cofield was reinstated to the Washington Redskins’ 53-man roster on Tuesday, allowing the nose tackle to make his return on Sunday after missing eight games because of a high right ankle sprain.
Cofield, who was placed on injured reserve with the “designated to return” label on Sept. 9, injured the ankle in the season-opening loss at Houston two days earlier. He played only 13 snaps in the 17-6 loss, leaving the game with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter.
With Cofield out, the Redskins moved Chris Baker to the middle of their defensive line. His return should allow Baker to move back to defensive end and fortify an interior pass rush, especially in nickel situations.
To make room for Cofield on the 53-man roster, the Redskins waived outside linebacker Jackson Jeffcoat, who was signed off the practice squad on Oct. 7 but played in only one of four games and solely on special teams. Washington has one opening on its practice squad, which could be the landing spot for Jeffcoat.
