Police in Duncanville, Texas, are asking for the public’s help in finding the person responsible for fatally shooting a 15-year-old cancer patient in front of his own home.

Ryan Lara, who suffered from lymphoma, was shot to death Saturday about 11:20 p.m., as he was moving his parent’s car from the street to the driveway, a local CBS affiliate reported.

Police believe the shooting was part of an attempted robbery. A family member reportedly fired his own gun at the suspect’s car, but police don’t know if anyone was hit.

Family members said Ryan had just started to improve after undergoing chemotherapy.

“He showed a lot of progress and he was actually doing very well,” his oldest brother told CBS. “He was real strong — acting like he didn’t even have cancer.”

North Texas Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of anyone responsible. Family members believe the suspect was driving a gray or silver 4-door compact sedan, the station reported.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Duncanville Police Detective Jeff Pollock at 972-780-5000 x1103 or Crime Stoppers at 1-877-373-8477.
