A gunman in Syria unleashed bullets on a bus in a region near Damascus, killing four nuclear scientists and electric engineers riding aboard, a pro-government newspaper reported Monday.

The area where they were shot and killed was relatively peaceful, and police say the men were likely the target, The Associated Press reported.

The scientists, who were Syrian nationals, were heading to the Scientific Research Center near the capital city. Local media suggested the Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-linked terror group, was to blame.

Another source, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reported it was five, not four, nuclear engineers who were killed, AP said.
