Garth Brooks feels his new song, “Mom,” which he debuted Nov. 7 during an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” is long overdue.
“It should’ve been written 50 years ago,” Mr. Brooks told GMA anchor Robin Roberts about the tribute to moms. “It’s a conversation between God and this unborn child about ready to go down to Earth, and when God describes what a mom is, whew, it kills me.”
Mr. Brooks’ new album, “Man Against Machine,” his first album in 13 years, will be released on Tuesday. While Mr. Brooks did not write “Mom,” and there are 13 other tracks on the album, Mr. Brooks said this one is special.
“It’s a beautiful song. I wish I’d written it, but I didn’t, and I’ve gotta tell you, ’The Dance’ is my favorite Garth Brooks thing, you know, ever, just love that song,” Mr. Brooks told Ms. Roberts. “If there was ever a song that could ever rival it, this is (it), just because of the context of it. … You know I’m a mama’s boy.”
Mr. Brooks’ mother, Colleen, died due to cancer in 1999.
He also made news this weekend after he gave his guitar to a woman battling cancer during a concert in Minneapolis.
Teresa Shaw, a mother of three, made her way to the front of Mr. Brooks’ concert Friday night by showing crowd monitors her sign and, as each one read it, she edged closer and closer to the country superstar. The sign read, “Chemo This Morning, Garth Tonight, Enjoying the Dance.”
According to a Minnesota CBS affiliate, “As Brooks sang the song’s lyrics — ‘I could have missed the pain, but I’d a had to miss the dance’ — the camera caught her sign.” Once Mr. Brooks saw Ms. Shaw, he put everything on hold to honor her fight.
“You have all of my strength,” he told her. “You have everyone’s strength in here.”
