OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Two reported sightings of an Oklahoma teenager who disappeared nearly a year ago while hiking in Ecuador are providing hope to relatives that he may be found safe.
August Reiger went missing in June 2013 while hiking with family on a vacation in the resort town of Banos. His father, Chris Reiger, told The Oklahoman (https://bit.ly/1saytr0 ) that two possible sightings have been reported in the past week, but there’s no confirmation that the person seen was actually August.
“We certainly haven’t given up hope that he’s going to be found, no doubt about that,” Chris Reiger said Thursday. “We still think he will be.”
His son had recently graduated as a valedictorian from Classen School of Advanced Studies in Oklahoma City and was planning to attend the University of Oklahoma. After he disappeared during the hike, crews repeatedly searched the trail but turned up no sign of the teen, meaning it was unlikely that he fell or got lost.
August Reiger had no money or passport with him when he disappeared. Authorities in Ecuador told Reiger’s family that they believe the teen was kidnapped, and Interpol has been distributing photos of him throughout Latin America.
Chris Reiger said Thursday that the family appreciates the support they have received in Ecuador and in Oklahoma.
“We feel everything that can be done is being done,” he said.
