ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York officials have identified 51 bridges statewide most at risk from repeated flooding, saying they need upgrades and retrofits that will cost more than $257 million.
The bridges have been scoured and lost foundation materials like sand and rocks from around and beneath abutments, piers, foundations and embankments.
The 51 range from the greater Albany area and Hudson and Mohawk valleys to Long Island, the North Country, Finger Lakes, western New York and the Southern Tier.
An estimated $193 million will be paid by the Federal Emergency Management Agency if all are approved for grants.
State officials say they were built to the codes and standards of their time, remain safe and open for everyday traffic, but are now vulnerable to scour from more intense and frequent weather events.
