Most admired first ladies: Barbara Bush, tied with Hillary Clinton

When it comes to America’s favorite first ladies, Hillary Clinton comes in with the most-admired status at 27 percent of the vote — tied for first with Barbara Bush.

The poll from NBC News/Wall Street Journal measured first ladies’ favor among people over the past 25 years. Coming in third: Michelle Obama, with 24 percent of the vote, CNN reported.

Laura Bush, meanwhile, stands in fourth place, with 17 percent.

But look beyond the numbers, and huge difference arise among races and political parties.

For example, 42 percent of Democrats like Mrs. Obama the best, followed closely — just 3 percentage points — by Mrs. Clinton.

Among Republicans, though, the first Mrs. Bush tops at 45 percent while the second Mrs. Bush garners 36 percent.

Meanwhile, independents like Barbara Bush the best, giving her 28 percent of their votes, CNN reported.

And by race: Whites, by and large, admire Barbara Bush best, voting her tops fully a third of the time. Mrs. Clinton gets 24 percent of the white vote.

Mrs. Obama, however, won hands down among blacks, with 58 percent of their favor, followed by 30 percent for Mrs. Clinton. Among Hispanics and Latinos, Mrs. Clinton tops, though, at 45 percent compared to Mrs. Obama’s 29 percent.

The poll, conducted April 23-27, involved 1,000 adults around the nation who were polled by telephone. The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
