I watched the phenomenal acceptance speech by Oklahoma City Thunder basketball player Kevin Durant when Mr. Durant received his MVP award from the NBA (“Kevin Durant is NBA MVP, beating out LeBron James,” Web, May 5).

Mr. Durant praised his single mom for keeping him and his brother “off the streets,” for clothing and feeding them and for encouraging him in his efforts to play basketball. His mother, he said, also made serious personal sacrifices for her children.

If America had more mothers like Kevin Durant’s, a lot of our “social” problems would be solved. Thank you, Mr. Durant, for thanking God and your mom for a great life, and thanks to Prince George’s County and to Montrose Christian School in Montgomery County for producing a giant in professional sports to set a great example for our young people.
