CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has welcomed the president of Ireland to the city.

Irish President Michael Higgins and Irish first lady Sabina Higgins were in Chicago on Friday. President Higgins met with Mayor Emanuel. The mayor’s office says the two discussed Chicago and Ireland’s commitment and close relationship.

The city says there are more than two dozen Ireland-based companies in the Chicago area and more than 40 Chicago-based companies in Ireland.

The mayor’s office says Chicago has about 730,000 residents with Irish ancestry.
