BEDFORD, Va. (AP) - Bedford County’s school board plans to trim 46 teaching positions in a cost-cutting move.

The News & Advance (https://tinyurl.com/knufod5) reports the board Thursday agreed to increase the student-teacher ratio and shift the burden of rising health-care costs to teachers.

Board chairman Gary Hostutler says larger class sizes may vary across schools and that retirement could account for many of the eliminated positions. He says if not enough teachers retire, younger teachers with less experience most likely will be targeted.

The district is facing a $1 million cut to its operations budget.
