TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - The state highway department has awarded the contract for the final section of the new bypass around Terre Haute, giving the project a fall 2016 completion deadline more than a decade after work started.
The four-lane Indiana 641 bypass is to go about 6 miles linking Interstate 70 and U.S. 41 around the city’s southeast side.
Final approval was given this week on a $47 million contract with Beaty Construction Inc. of Boggstown for the project’s final phase, state highway department spokeswoman Debbie Calder told the Tribune-Star (https://bit.ly/1nw86LL ).
That phase will including linking the I-70/Indiana 46 interchange into the bypass.
“We don’t know if that will be done this year or next year as we have not had a pre-construction meeting with the contractor as of yet,” Calder said.
Work first started on the $150 million project in 2003 but progress has faced several delays, including termination of a contract with a contractor. The bypass is aimed at helping relieve traffic congestion on U.S. 41 on Terre Haute’s south side and open up new areas for development.
Another contractor is set this year to build an embankment along the bypass and start construction of five bridges, including at a planned interchange, Calder said. This phase will later include construction of two large roundabouts.
Walsh Construction Co. of Crown Point has a $25.3 million contract for that work.
Temporary pavement will be used to maintain traffic flow and access to adjoining properties until construction is finished, Calder said.
