TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - The Traverse City Film Festival is getting a little more star power on its board.
Festival officials on Wednesday announced five additions to the board, including actor and playwright Jeff Daniels and former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1s6rGP2 ) reported.
The festival is in its 10th season. It was co-founded by documentary filmmaker and Michigan native Michael Moore. He says the expansion augments the festival’s growth into a position of national and international importance in the film industry.
“Those big names can make calls to filmmakers and say ’Hey, bring your film to Traverse City,’” said Moore, the board’s president. “That will only help us reach out to more people.”
The addition of Morello - who has appeared in films and whose music has been featured on screen - broadens the audience appeal that the board represents, Moore said.
“I wanted to sort of put our toe into the music part of cinema,” Moore said. “Next year, maybe do the same thing with comedy.”
Mark Cousins, a film critic and director and Tia Lessin, who produced and directed “Trouble the Water,” an Academy Award-nominated Hurricane Katrina portrait also joined the board. The festival’s board now includes 11 members.
Two of the festival’s founders still hold positions on the board - Moore and Traverse City commercial photographer John Robert Williams. The volunteer board has expanded three times in 10 years, said Deb Lake, the Film Festival’s executive director.
This year’s festival is scheduled to take place July 29-Aug. 3.
