WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - The dean of the graduate college at the University of Illinois has been selected to become Purdue University’s new provost.

Purdue President Mitch Daniels announced Thursday that Debasish “Deba” Dutta will take over as the university’s next provost on July 1. He replaces Tim Sands as Purdue’s top academic administrator.

Sands was picked in December to become president at Virginia Tech University.

In addition to his duties at associate provost and dean at Illinois, Dutta holds a named professorship in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering. He also is a scholar-in-residence at the National Academy of Engineering, where he is leading a national study about education for innovation.
