NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - Parents and children are demanding safer crossings after three children were struck walking home from school by a vehicle driven by New Brunswick’s fire director.
They plan to attend Thursday night’s Middlesex County freeholders meeting after protesting at Wednesday’s City Council meeting.
The Home News Tribune (https://mycj.co/RqeMjv ) reports the residents, mostly from the city’s Latino community, complained about the need for more crossing guards on Livingston Avenue.
Police Capt. J.T. Miller says the city has been trying to hire them. But Miller says the police can’t always staff crossings when guards call out sick.
The investigation continues into Tuesday’s accident in which Fire Director Robert Rawls struck two 14-year-old girls and a 6-year-old boy. One girl is in fair condition and the other girl and boy are in good condition.
