SAO PAULO (AP) - Brazilian club Palmeiras has fired coach Gilson Kleina after the team’s third straight loss.
Thursday’s announcement came a day after Palmeiras’ 2-1 loss at Sampaio Correia in the second round of the Brazilian Cup. The second leg is next week in Sao Paulo.
Palmeiras was coming off a 1-0 home defeat by Fluminense and a 4-2 loss at Flamengo in the Brazilian league. It beat Criciuma 2-1 in its first league match.
Kleina coached Palmeiras to a 56-29-20 record since replacing Luiz Felipe Scolari late in 2012. Kleina’s replacement has yet to be announced.
Celebrating its centennial, Palmeiras is the Brazilian club with most national titles - eight in the Brazilian league and two in the Brazilian Cup.
It played in the league’s second division in 2013.
