Rep. Carolyn Maloney said Thursday that “decisive and swift” action — including sanctions against terrorist group Boko Haram — is needed to bring home the 276 girls reportedly kidnapped from a school in Nigeria.
“I hope the world will respond to this horrendous human tragedy with the same sense of urgency and compassion, and the same level of assistance, that was offered in the search for the missing Malaysian aircraft,” the New York Democrat said in a floor speech.
The world has reacted with disgust and outrage to a video clip from Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, who said he planned to sell the girls as young brides.
“Make no mistake, this is human trafficking,” Ms. Maloney said. “They say they’re selling them into marriage. They’re selling them into sex slavery, rape and human bondage.”
