LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - President Barack Obama has selected New Mexico State University associate professor Sue Forster-Cox to serve on the United States-Mexico Border Health Commission.

Forster-Cox teaches in NMSU’s department of public health sciences. She says serving on the commission will offer an opportunity to improve public health standards in communities along the border.

The bi-national commission is co-chaired by the health secretaries from both countries. It consists of presidential appointees and state health officials from each of the 10 border states.

Forster-Cox and the other members are looking for ways to improve access to health services and to prevent and manage infectious and chronic diseases. Another commission goal is to promote research and policy development in the border region.

Forster-Cox has been a faculty member at NMSU since 2002.
