FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell says he raised more than $1 million in the month before the GOP primary.

McConnell’s campaign announced Thursday it raised $1.07 million in April. Kentucky’s Republican Senate primary is May 20. McConnell will face Louisville businessman Matt Bevin, who lags McConnell in fundraising and public polling.

But McConnell’s overall cash balance did not increase much. The Republican Senate leader’s campaign said it still has more than $10 million in cash available, roughly the same amount it had at the end of the first fundraising quarter in March. McConnell’s campaign started airing a statewide TV ad on Wednesday that cost more than $100,000.
