PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Lawmakers have held for further study a bill that would end pensions for municipal workers spending life in prison.
The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1ivn3bU ) reports that the House Judiciary Committee heard testimony Wednesday from several people, including Providence Mayor Angel Taveras who asked that the bill be introduced.
He said he was frustrated that a convicted murderer, Nicholas Gianquitti (jee-an-KWIH’-tee), is collecting a city disability pension.
Gianquitti was briefly a police officer before he was injured and left his job. He later shot a neighbor to death.
Gianquitti continues to collect a pension of around $50,000 per year.
Representatives of police and public employee unions raised questions about the bill, including asking what happens if the worker is exonerated, and expressing concern it would hurt workers’ family members.
