GRANITE FALLS, Wash. (AP) - The Gold Basin Campground near Granite Falls is about 15 miles away from the mudslide that destroyed dozens of homes at Oso, but there are some unsettling similarities.

The campground is wedged between the Mountain Loop Highway and the South Fork Stillaguamish River and sits at the base of a hill that has a history of landslides.

The Seattle Times reports (https://is.gd/uPcnhQ) there have been proposals to move or close the campground but the Forest Service says it has invested heavily in facilities and doesn’t have a good site for relocation.

Gold Basin is the largest campground in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest with room for more than 800 campers. It opens this week.
