CHICAGO (AP) - A suburban Chicago businessman is accused of violating federal law by trying to send a thermal imaging camera to Pakistan.
In a Thursday statement, the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago didn’t specify who sought the device that can see human images at night. The more than $100,000 camera can be used for both military and commercial purposes.
A grand jury indictment charges 33-year-old Bilal Ahmed with violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and export regulations. If convicted, the Bolingbrook man could face up to 30 years in prison.
Prosecutors say Ahmed is president of Schaumburg-based Trexim Corp. He was arrested March 14 and released on a $100,000 secured bond. An arraignment date in federal court in Chicago hasn’t been set.
A message seeking comment from his attorney wasn’t returned.
