WASHINGTON (AP) - The reading specialist who questioned the literacy level of athletes being admitted to North Carolina will take part in a U.S. Senate committee hearing on whether the NCAA exploits college athletes.
In an email to The Associated Press, Mary Willingham said she will testify to the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation during Wednesday’s hearing. Willingham recently resigned from UNC, which has spent the past three years dealing with an academic scandal involving athletes.
The committee hasn’t released a witness list for the hearing on “Promoting the Well-Being and Academic Success of College Athletes.”
The Chronicle of Higher Education first reported the hearing and said former UCLA player Ed O’Bannon also plans to testify. The O’Bannon antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA is scheduled to go to trial next month.
