MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants to add the greater prairie chicken to a statewide incidental take permit.

Incidental take permits essentially allow people to unintentionally kill a limited number of endangered or threatened animals in the process of pursuing an otherwise legal activity. The DNR has proposed adding the greater prairie chicken to the list of species on a statewide incidental take permit for grassland and savanna managers.

The chicken is on the state’s threatened species list. But DNR staffers say management activities covered under the permit likely won’t jeopardize the chicken’s continued existence or reduce the species’ chances for recovery.

The agency will take public comments on the proposal through June 5.
