PHOENIX (AP) - The federal Bureau of Land Management has appointed a new manager for its district that encompasses northwestern Arizona north of the Grand Canyon.

BLM State Director Ray Suazo says Timothy Burke starts his new job as director of the BLM’s Arizona Strip District later this month.

The Arizona Strip District includes parts of Arizona that are particularly remote and rugged, such as the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument and five wilderness areas.

Burke started working for the BLM in 1979 and has worked for the agency in Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and California.

He’s been the manager of the bureau’s Alturas Field Office in California for the past 16 years.
