DETROIT (AP) - A transit police unit is starting to establish its presence on Detroit Department of Transportation buses.
The Detroit News reports (https://bit.ly/1jA1uvd ) transit officers on Monday began riding city buses. The unit is being overseen by the Transit Police Officers union, seeking to curb violence on busses and improve safety at downtown’s Rosa Parks Transit Center.
Detroit Transit Police Officers Association President Arthur Divers says plans call for putting uniformed and plainclothes officers “where they are needed most.”
At the same time, Detroit is working to hire at least 30 additional officers to supplement the unit now responsible for patrols of the buses and the People Mover. Officials say they hope to have the unit fully established by summer.
Formerly, transit officers were assigned exclusively to the People Mover.
