SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Spokane police are handing out warnings to people sitting on downtown sidewalks, telling them they are violating a new ordinance that took effect May 1.

KXLY reports (https://bit.ly/1jdcTS6) police have been handing out informational fliers to people sitting on planters, garbage cans and mailboxes.

Capt. Judi Carl says moving people along improves the perception of downtown safety. Police also are cracking down on jaywalking, panhandling, littering and graffiti in Spokane.
