LOS ANGELES (AP) - An analysis finds the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has slipped far behind its schedule to replace aging power poles.

The Daily News reported Tuesday (https://bit.ly/1kMGWfR ) that of the 320,000 poles in the DWP service territory, roughly half are 50 years or older. And about 87,000 poles have exceeded their 60-year lifespan.

Internal reports say the agency needs to replace them at a pace of 5,000 poles per year to keep up. But the newspaper says a program launched in 2007 after major power outages has failed to produce results.

Last year the agency replaced fewer than 1,200 poles.

The DWP faces lawsuits from victims of last year’s wildfire near Santa Clarita. They claim neglected DWP power lines sparked the blaze, which burned 24 homes.
